500 Words a Day Writing Challenge

500 words a day is the most popular daily writing target for a reason: it is achievable, sustainable, and adds up fast.

Why 500 words?

  • Takes about 30-45 minutes
  • Fits into most schedules
  • Produces 3,500 words per week (writing 7 days)
  • Finishes an 80,000-word novel in about 5.5 months
  • Low enough to be sustainable, high enough to feel productive

How to do the challenge

  • Commit to writing 500 words every day for 30 days
  • Write at the same time each day
  • Log your words in BookBeast after each session
  • Do not edit - just write forward
  • If you write more than 500, great. If you hit exactly 500, also great.

What 500 words looks like

500 words is roughly:

  • Two double-spaced pages
  • About 3-4 paragraphs of fiction
  • One decent scene or scene fragment

After 30 days

At the end of the challenge, you will have 15,000 words. That is roughly 50-60 pages. More importantly, you will have built a daily writing habit. Keep going.
