Word Count Per Chapter

Most chapters in published novels are 1,500 to 5,000 words. The right length for yours depends on genre, pacing, and what each chapter needs to accomplish.

Word count per chapter by genre

  • Thriller / Mystery: 1,500-3,000 words. Short chapters create urgency.
  • Romance: 2,500-4,000 words. Long enough for emotional beats.
  • Literary fiction: 3,000-6,000 words. Room for introspection and layered prose.
  • Fantasy / Sci-Fi: 4,000-8,000 words. Worldbuilding demands more space.
  • Young Adult: 1,500-3,000 words. Shorter chapters match faster pacing.
  • Middle Grade: 1,000-2,500 words. Quick reads for younger attention spans.

How many chapters in a novel?

An 80,000-word novel with 3,000-word chapters has roughly 25-27 chapters. But this varies. Some novels have 10. Some have 60. The number matters less than whether each chapter moves the story forward.

Should chapters be the same length?

Not necessarily. Consistent lengths create a comfortable rhythm, but varying length can be a tool. A sudden two-page chapter after long ones creates a jolt. Aim for a general range and vary within it.

Using chapter length to plan

If your novel is 80,000 words with 25 chapters at roughly 3,200 words each, at 1,000 words a day, each chapter takes about three days. Set your writing goal per chapter and track your progress with BookBeast.
